BOLT

The Sprinter

Unbeatable for the first two sections. There are usually five.

The shard

A Lantern shard that got the flash — the instant the light arrives, and nothing about the part where it stays. Bolt has led more opening sections than any marble in the championship and very few closing ones.

Ask me at the second boundary. After that I am not really available.

BOLT

How Bolt races

Bolt spends everything, flat out, through the first two sections, and then stops. Not fades — stops. There is no taper and nothing held back: the power ends at a fixed line on the track and afterwards Bolt is an entirely ordinary marble that happens to be a long way in front and going backwards.

The signature

Two Sections

Everything Bolt has, spent flat across sections one and two, and then precisely nothing.

What it costs

There are usually five sections and a run-in. Bolt's whole race is over before the field has finished sorting itself out, and on a long track it is under a third of the descent.

The tell

Determined until the section-two boundary, one single frame of pain at the crossing, and then idle for the rest of the race with no reaction to position at all. Bolt visibly stops caring, and the moment is one frame wide.

The voice

Hear Bolt

A single "ZIP" that climbs a fifth in ninety milliseconds and then shuts. The shortest thing on the grid, and the only one-syllable voice on it.

In the race mix — G6, 1568 Hz, The drop

A triplet at the start and then nothing. After the second section Bolt is cut from the mix entirely — the joke told a second time in sound.

In the stands

A short track is a Bolt track, and the day the generator draws one is the payoff for having watched three long ones.

Rivalries

Six Seconds and Twenty-Six

The same total, spent in opposite ways.

011 meeting
Moss MOSS

Bolt spends everything in two sections and then has nothing. Moss spends a trickle, always, and never has anything worth clipping. Over a full descent they arrive at roughly the same place having had completely different afternoons — one of them was on television for six seconds and one of them was not on television at all.

Short track: Bolt, comfortably. Long track: Moss, quietly, while nobody is watching.
