The shard

Where Jade comes from

The Thicket shard that was watching the slow part — the growth that does nothing visible for a season and then takes a wall in a fortnight. Jade kept the patience and, more importantly, kept the ending.

How Jade races

For three quarters of a descent Jade is heavy, unhurried and going backwards. Then the final quarter arrives and something switches: the drag lifts, the eyes open, and Jade comes through the field at a speed it has not shown all race. It is the most reliably thrilling final five seconds on the grid.

The signatureThe Last Quarter

The eyes open, and everything Jade has been saving for twenty seconds is spent at once.

The voice

Hear Jade

“mm-mm… ha-YAH!”

Napping, napping, then wide awake and right on time. Pick a mood and Jade says it that way.

In the race mix: G4, 392 Hz. A drone an octave below for three quarters of the race, and then it resolves upward. The release is the moment.

Rivalry

Jade vs Crimson

The Hourglass

One owns the first third. One owns the last quarter.

The same race told from both ends. Crimson is clear of the field before the first section has emptied and is being reeled in from the moment it is; Jade spends twenty seconds going backwards on purpose and arrives with everything it saved. They are almost never near each other until the exact moment it is decided.

Crimson has led into the final section more often than anyone on the grid. Jade is why that statistic exists and means nothing.
