RUST

The Survivor

Has been last in every race and has never finished last.

The shard

Scraped off the underside of the kiln, where the heat had been going on so long it had stopped being an event. Rust is the least glamorous shard of the six aspects and the only one never once eliminated from a story early.

Last is a place you pass through.

RUST

How Rust races

Rust spends most of a descent at the back and is entirely relaxed about it. Something in the shard refuses the final position: the longer Rust is genuinely last, the harder it works, and the instant it is second-from-last that effort vanishes completely. Rust does not climb. Rust simply cannot be left at the bottom.

The signature

Never Last

Two full seconds in last place, and then a recovery that stops dead the moment the position is escaped.

What it costs

The power exists only in last place. Rust has no answer at all to a race where it is running eighth — the effort is not available, and eighth is where Rust usually finishes.

The tell

Freckles, and an expression that never once looks worried. It is the only marble on the grid with no worry in its face at all, which reads as either serenity or a complete absence of self-awareness.

The voice

Hear Rust

An unbothered "meh-nuh" that sags on both syllables. Nothing here is in any hurry.

In the race mix — G2, 98.0 Hz, While last

One low note with a very long tail, retriggered while Rust is last and cut the instant it is not. You can hear the situation.

In the stands

The marble the stands adopt in week three, once the flashier allegiances have hurt them.

The Bill

Ember Racing teammates. One borrows enormously. One only works once it is broke.

Ember EMBER

Ember's four seconds end and the repayment begins, and the field comes back past it in a rush. Rust is somewhere near the bottom of that field, working hard for the only reason Rust ever works hard, which is that it is last. They pass each other going in opposite directions about twice a month, and neither of them is having a good time.

Neither can help it. Ember's power is a loan with fixed terms and Rust's is only ever issued in last place.
