COBALT

The Metronome

Never spectacular. Never last. Never anywhere near the highlight reel.

The shard

The Trench shard, taken from the deepest part of the floor where the pressure had been constant so long that nothing moved sideways any more. Cobalt kept the pressure, and with it the conviction that wandering is a failure of character.

The line does not care what the race is doing.

COBALT

How Cobalt races

Cobalt picks a line and holds it against everything. Where the rest of the field is skidding across four lanes through a chicane, Cobalt goes down its own column looking almost bored. It is the least exciting twenty-six seconds available and it is very often sixth, which over thirty rounds is how championships are actually won.

The signature

Line Discipline

No lateral wander at all, through sections specifically designed to produce it.

What it costs

The discipline works in both directions. Cobalt cannot get out of a bad lane either — put it on the wrong side of a fork and it will ride that mistake to the finish with perfect composure.

The tell

Nothing. No override, no signature expression, no tic. Cobalt is the only marble on the grid whose face gives away absolutely nothing, and after a few rounds that is how you spot it.

The voice

Hear Cobalt

Two identical "tik-tik" syllables at identical pitch and identical length. No bend, no vibrato, no third one. Cobalt is the only voice here that does not go anywhere.

In the race mix — A3, 220 Hz, The metronome

The root the entire mix is tuned against, struck once per section. Cobalt is the one voice that can never sound wrong.

Respected, rarely loved, and quietly leading the table in about a third of all seasons.

Cobalt COBALT

The Line and the Leech

One holds a lane against everything. One is what "everything" means.

101 meeting
Fuchsia FUCHSIA

Cobalt's entire game is refusing to move sideways, and Fuchsia's entire game is arriving sideways at whoever is in front. When Cobalt leads, Fuchsia is already on the way — and Cobalt is the slowest marble on the grid at recovering a lane, so it costs Cobalt more than it costs anybody else.

Fuchsia does not especially want to win this. Fuchsia wants Cobalt not to.
